1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
My freshman year history teacher pulled me aside after class and brought me up to his wife's classroom who happened to be the crew coach at Brooks School. They both agreed that I should think about trying crew in the spring instead of tennis.
My first practice was in San Diego for our winter training trip and we went out in the eight. I remember thinking that I needed a seatbelt because I thought I was going to fall out of the boat. Also we were rowing by six's and when I was the pair sitting out I was trying my hardest to keep my blade off the water so that I wouldn't disturb the people rowing. Everyone was yelling at me but I didn't understand why, I thought I was doing a pretty good job keeping my blade off.
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
I started to really love rowing when I rowed with the "Blond Boat" at Brooks. We were all blond (our coxswain was red headed with blond highlights) and we had a lot of fun. We also won New England's and National's that year as well as the next.
As for the National team, I wanted to make it ever since I made the Junior team in 2005 and we raced the Senior team at Mercer. I remember thinking they were really strong and cool. I wanted to be just like them!
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
Worst race - CanAmMex 2004, I was stroking and steering the straight four, first time doing either. A girl caught a crab in the middle of the race and I didn't know what was going on. We ended up two lanes over and I steered us back but went too far and ended up three lanes over on the other side. We just kind of zig-zagged down the course. Needless to say we probably raced a 3000m course because of me.
Best race - 2008 Lucerne World Cup in the pair.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
I count when I row.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Well since I am a young rower, never think you have finally learned how to row, because you're probably not even close, just like me.
